Fontaines is called "a village of water and stone".
To commemorate the thousands of stoneworkers who worked here, the Maison du Patrimoine is hosting an exhibition entitled "From Stone to Work".
It describes the geology and history of the quarries. It presents the traditional tools of the stone trades (some of which are still used in restoration work). It concludes with the magnificent marble statue of "Innocence and Love" (1864), by Fontenay sculptor François PROTHEAU.
