All forms of sustainable transport lead to Greater Chalon

The Grand Chalon area is easy to explore and get around thanks to a wide range of sustainable transport options. Whether on foot, by bike, by boat or by train, there are plenty of ways to reach and explore the area whilst minimising the environmental impact of travel. Criss-crossed by major cycle routes, boasting a well-connected railway station and offering river travel on the Saône and the Canal du Centre, the Grand Chalon area provides the ideal conditions for a slower, more environmentally friendly and more sustainable way of exploring.

Cycling: the best option

With over 42km of cycle paths already in the Greater Chalon area, cycling ticks all the boxes. For journeys of less than 5 km — which account for nearly half of all daily journeys — it’s often quicker than driving, with no traffic jams or parking problems. Zero CO₂ emissions when in use, fuel savings, a boost to your health… and the added bonus of a good mood!
With the expansion of cycle infrastructure and safe routes, cycling is proving to be a winning combination: good for the planet, good for the local area, and good for your health.

In France, the transport sector accounts for nearly a third of greenhouse gas emissions, a large proportion of which is linked to everyday road travel. Reducing the use of private cars is therefore a key means of limiting the environmental impact of transport and sustainably improving the quality of life across the region.

To support this transition, Le Grand Chalon is introducing a range of solutions that promote sustainable and alternative modes of transport. The Grand Chalon area is home to a wealth of natural habitats, including the limestone grasslands of the Côte Chalonnaise, which are designated as part of the Natura 2000 network. For the urban area, it is important to preserve biodiversity and water resources, and to protect the population from flooding. Grand Chalon is home to remarkable biodiversity, with numerous rare or protected plant and animal species such as bats and the woodlark. The Conservatoire d’espaces naturels de Bourgogne, a non-profit organisation under the 1901 Act, works to preserve natural habitats, flora and fauna. Aware of the fragility of these sites, the Tourist Office is committed to raising visitors’ awareness of their ecological value, how they function and the best practices to follow, in order to encourage a respectful and sustainable exploration of these natural areas, which are emblematic of the region. You can also explore the many parks and gardens in the Grand Chalon area, which offer everyone a rejuvenating escape and raise awareness of sustainability issues.
