Description
This short route takes in the different faces of Fontaines, offering visitors a glimpse of its stone houses, lapidary inscriptions, its prestigious Saint Nicolas wash-house... with a return visit to the church of Saint Just in the grounds of the old castle.
The church :
Dating from the 12th century, this is a Cistercian church. Built within the walls of the old castle, it was partially burnt down during the Hundred Years' War and rebuilt in the mid-15th century. Listed as a Historic Monument, it boasts beautiful stained glass windows, including one from the 15th century. Its baptismal font, two altarpieces and their statues bear witness to the labour of Fontenay's stone carvers and sculptors.
