History and Heritage of Sampigny-lès-Maranges

71150 Sampigny-lès-Maranges

Description

Halfway between Beaune and Chalon-sur-Saône, Sampigny-lès-Maranges, nestled in the narrow Cozanne Valley, offers an atmosphere of serenity. This authentic wine-growing village, with its thousand-year history, has preserved its built heritage within a diverse landscape of hills, river, and emerging granite outcrops. Its vineyard, the southernmost on the Côte de Beaune, is renowned for its wines. The Maranges vineyards have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.
Numerous hiking trails and the Santenay–Nolay greenway that cross the area provide walkers and cyclists with a rich environment to explore diverse landscapes and natural habitats, home to abundant biodiversity. Let yourself be guided along a route that winds through the village streets and surrounding paths. Around twenty information panels will take you back in time, marked by the influence of the canons of Autun from the Middle Ages to the present day. You will discover the history of the built heritage and local life, which has adapted over time. Along the way, you may meet winemakers who will share their expertise and passion with you as you taste their wines. The pottery workshop opens its doors to reveal the tradition of glazed earthenware. The scent of wood-fired bread may lead you to the bakery, and perhaps the sound of music from the Artifice ensemble will drift from the artist residence near the turbine. The “History & Heritage” trail begins at the entrance to the village when arriving from Cheilly-lès-Maranges. Leave your car in the parking area, where a general information panel welcomes you. Cross the bridge, then follow the blue markings to guide your walk.
