A2c / Thomas Ivernel lives in Paris and is a prolific artist who continues to explore the art of portraiture, urban night-time scenes, scenes of everyday life, the nude, couples… all in a contemporary style: “When I was a child, my dreamy nature naturally drew me to Watteau’s *Gilles*. Then I drew superheroes until one day, whilst travelling in Venice and Florence, I discovered Tintoretto and Caravaggio, who left an indelible mark on me. Finally, upon entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1989, I immersed myself in contemporary art.
Transformed by these pictorial journeys – which continue endlessly and yet have never caused me to stray, despite passing fashions, from my figurative view of the world – my work is repeatedly permeated by the themes of the suburbs, portraiture, nocturnal urban scenes and Africa.”
This exhibition spans twenty-five years of paintings. What links this diverse body of work? From the suburbs to urban night scenes, it is about our relationship with others and what binds us together as a group sharing the same space. Our relationship with others and, therefore, with ourselves. There is no message. Life can be dense, full of intertwining threads and vibrations. As in the painted performance featured in the video *Hypnotized*, presented here alongside a selection of the paintings that make up the work.
