Description

Peter Kernel’s noise rock is a gem of creativity, crafted using simple instruments. ZATO sketches out the contours of a dreamlike, minimalist world.
PETER KERNEL Aris Bassetti and Barbara Lehnhoff have been setting the pace for our lives with their albums and live shows since 2005. Sometimes tender, often raw, stormy or soothing, their noise rock is a gem of creativity, despite being played on very simple instruments: bass, guitar, drums and vocals. On stage, the trio takes the audience on an emotional journey ranging from rage to tears, from tension to euphoria, via laughter. In 2008, they released their debut album *How To Perform A Funeral*, followed by the 10-inch vinyl EP *The Ticket* in 2009, both on their own label, On The Camper Records. In 2011, *White Death & Black Heart*, co-released with the French label Africantape, propelled them to the forefront of the European and North American music scenes. *Thrill Addict* (2015) drove the point home: a sold-out launch gig in Paris, the album reissued within a few months. These two records remain true gems of 2010s indie rock on this side of the Atlantic. Remaining fiercely independent – from recording (in their own studio) to distribution (via their own label) and visual content (in-house videos and artwork) – Peter Kernel released *The Size Of The Night* in 2018, hailed by audiences and the media as ‘one of the band’s finest albums’: more subdued, more introspective, an attempt at mutual acceptance etched into the grooves. A new album, due for release in early 2027, is in the works. ZATO Long a duo, the project led by Céline Rigaux (violin/vocals) and Alex Cordet (guitar/vocals) was enhanced by the arrival of Morgan Arnault on drums in 2024, resulting in a more organic and instinctive sound, a liberated energy that continues to draw inspiration from the roots of indie music. This transition to a trio has allowed the project to intensify a unique aesthetic, rich in cinematic and literary references and steeped in English poetry. Since its inception, ZATO has been shaping a dreamlike, minimalist world, poised between light and shadow, where intimacy and sensitivity are territories to be explored and shared. Driven by English-language vocals, their music explores contrasts, oscillating between raw, organic textures and ethereal melodies, trip-hop influences and folk heritage, acoustic sounds and raw electronic energy. After more than 300 concerts, five albums or EPs and a musical film shot in Quebec City, the trio is currently preparing for the release of their next album, *Real World Is a Fake*, in autumn 2026. The track ‘Days-illusion’, whose short-film-style music video was released on 26 September 2025 (directed by Benjamin Chagneux), is the first single from the album.
