A reading by David Rougerie (La Boétie’s ‘Discourse on Voluntary Servitude’)
My artistic work is a hymn to life.
Morbidity and ripe fruit coexist and form the field of tension within our perception and, consequently, our emotions. The way we understand our existence depends on our experience of time and space.
This theme is reflected in dance. For me, everything is a constellation: how does one thing relate to another, and how does that relationship evolve over time? This is a fundamental sculptural consideration.
I draw from moving models in order to express this motivation.
Often, as the viewer walks round my sculptures, they are met with surprising impressions, as if the works were changing in response to the viewer’s movements.
My drawings aim to convey a segment of movement. Of course, they do not actually change, but they give the impression of bearing witness to a change in progress.
