Visitors are treated to a true rediscovery of the cathedral, whilst restoration work continues in the chapels…
Whilst a number of preparatory studies and assessments had helped to identify the main phases of the project, earlier test excavations gave no indication whatsoever of the impressive amount of polychrome decoration ultimately discovered on the walls and vaults of the nave, transept and chancel! Whilst it is not yet possible to date all these painted decorations precisely, it is clear that the rediscovered polychromy allows us to see the building as it appeared to the faithful in the late Middle Ages or early Renaissance, just as the vaulting of the nave was being completed… Nor should we forget the equally visible traces of 19th-century Neo-Gothic painting!
So come and discover the colourful Saint-Vincent Cathedral, a far cry from the often sombre and austere depictions of the Middle Ages!
