It was Émiland Gauthey, assistant engineer to the Estates of Burgundy, who in 1769 provided the town with the plans and drawings for this Italian-style theatre.
Built in 1776 on land that had belonged to the Jesuit Order and was purchased by the local council, it was heavily inspired by the contemporary Opéra de Versailles, designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel. Of this original building, only the interior spaces and the façade have survived, as the interior décor was redesigned in 1886. The latter is in an eclectic style typical of its time, where modern materials and references to the past abound!
