Introducing Espace des Arts

L’Espace des Arts is a national stage and one of Chalon-sur-Saône’s leading cultural venues. This modern, spacious complex comprises two performance halls with exceptional acoustics. The large auditorium, with a capacity of 850, offers a wide range of programming, from theater to concerts.

Initiated in 1961 by André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, who wanted to decentralize culture to make it accessible to all, the Maisons de la Culture grew in number in medium-sized provincial towns until the early 1970s.

The Espace des Arts in Chalon-sur-Saône is one of them. Inaugurated in 1971, it was designed by architect Daniel Petit in the Brutalist style of the Moderne movement, first exemplified by Le Corbusier. The public facility became a mission theater in 1995 and was classified as a Scène nationale in 2006.

In addition to its programming, L’espace des Arts hosts LES THEÂTRALES, 6 plays per season, the best of Parisian theater.

Proximity to major cities: Chalon-sur-Saône is an hour’s drive from Lyon and 1h20 from Paris by TGV, providing a large population and potential visitor pool. Dijon and Macon are less than 1 hour’s drive from Espace des Arts, making it easy to attend local events.
