Since 1477, Chalon-sur-Saône has occupied a strategic position on the border between Burgundy, which had become French, and Franche-Comté, which was now part of the Empire.
With the advent of the cast-iron cannonball, the medieval walls no longer fulfilled their protective role, and fortification work was carried out by Girolamo Bellamarto between 1547 and 1555.
The counter-mine (or escarpment) gallery can still be seen today in the Saint-Pierre bastion. A similar construction also existed in the Saint-Paul bastion, which has now been demolished.

These corridors, which ran along the sides and flanks of the bastion, served casemates pierced by embrasures. They ensured that the garrison could circulate under cover, and made it possible to spot potential attackers by ear.

Let yourself be guided by a guide from the towns and countries of art and history into the heart of this new system of protection for the town, virtually unique in Europe.
Reservations required on 03 85 93 15 98 (places are limited).

It is advisable to collect your ticket from the Heritage Centre.
