While a "châtelet" probably existed here as early as the 5th century, a fortified castle on a motte, possibly built around the year 1000, is attested to as early as the 12th century, and described in the 15th century.
It was built on a feudal motte and comprised an upper courtyard, housing the bailiff in a low, square tower facing the Saône, and a lower courtyard. In the centre is a square keep. The ducal and then royal prisons were built at its base. Until 1500, the bailiff, the representative of the Duke and later of the King of France, lived in the upper courtyard of the châtelet. Shortly afterwards, the King's representative sought more comfortable accommodation in the town.
