Born on the Saône as a port for the Eduens in Gaulish times, Chalon sur Saône enjoyed its heyday in the early and late Middle Ages, as the capital of the Merovingian kingdom of Burgundy and later as a venue for major international trade fairs. Now a City of Art and History, you’ll discover the old town with its timber-framed houses built between the 15th and 17th centuries, Saint Vincent’s cathedral and cloister, and the quays of the Saône.

Chalon, the cradle of photography, is home to Europe’s 1st image museum. Niépce’s photos, personal objects and cameras were collected as early as 1861. Since the museum’s opening in 1974, the collections have grown considerably, and today allow both laymen and enlightened amateurs to explore the history of photography through cameras and images.

Through two reconstructed classrooms, the Museum retraces the history of schools from the Revolution to the present day. The Republican School of the 19th century is presented in the Jules Ferry room, with period materials and teaching aids such as desks and back tutors. In the 1930s room, it’s the time of violet ink, sergeant-major pens and ink stains, the time of lessons in facts and morals.
