Chalon-sur-Saône: City of Art and History

Chalon-sur-Saône: City of Art and History

Built on the banks of the Saône, Chalon-sur-Saône was a naval base in antiquity. First mentioned in Julius Caesar’s Gallic War (58 B.C.) as Cabilonnum, the town was an important commercial crossroads in the Aeduan period, accessible from all over Europe by land and water. The Saône has always played a key role in Chalon’s history. It enabled the early development of trade and industry, and has long provided the people of Chalon with food and work. Today, Chalon-sur-Saône has been awarded the “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire” (City of Art and History) label, and boasts a rich historical heritage.
