Introducing the Piccolo Theater

The Piccolo theater is located right in the center of Chalon sur Saône, in the pedestrian district. It hosts concerts, shows, plays and events for the general public.

In 1769, Emiland Gauthey, sub-engineer for the Burgundy States, provided the city with plans and drawings for this Italian-style theater. Built in 1771 on land once owned by the Jesuit order and purchased by the commune, it was strongly inspired by the contemporary Versailles Opera House designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel. All that remains of this first building are the interior volumes and the façade, the interior decor having been redesigned in 1886. The façade’s taste for antiquity is evident in the large stone pilasters adorned with finely-decorated Ionic capitals with scrolls. The sobriety of the whole attests to the softening of forms at the end of Louis XV’s reign.
