Initially a simple suburb, Sainte Marie became a real district of the city in the 16th century, surrounded by ramparts. It was a major centre of the Catholic Reformation, with the installation of a renowned Carmelite monastery and then a general hospital, and was also home to many craftsmen and fishermen. It is undergoing a great revival at the beginning of the 21st century.
