The Canal du Centre, which today defines the identity of Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune, was not always universally supported. When it was first proposed, the project met with reluctance from local residents, before finally being completed at the end of the 18th century by the engineer Émiland Gauthey, bringing great prosperity to the village.
Around Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune, there are several villages where you can continue exploring the area. Whether it’s the sweeping views from the heights of Charrecey or the tranquil atmosphere in the villages along the Canal du Centre, these are stops not to be missed on a road trip through the Côte Chalonnaise.
Situated in the hills of the Côte Chalonnaise, Charrecey offers a peaceful setting amongst vineyards and rolling countryside. This unassuming village charms visitors with its natural surroundings and is an ideal base from which to explore the region’s panoramic views, away from the hustle and bustle.
Along the Canal du Centre, the villages of Saint-Bérain-sur-Dheune, Saint-Gilles and Dennevy share a common identity centred on the water and sustainable transport.
Straddling the canal, they offer the perfect setting for walks or cycle rides, set to the rhythm of passing boats and lush green landscapes. These villages invite you to enjoy a peaceful break at the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise’s river tourism.
